The Sacred Meal by Nora Gallagher
This book (I thought) was about communion, the Eucharist, the Lord’s Supper, etc. This book covers those topics, but it digs much deeper into our souls, and what we are called to be, and do.
Gallagher questions us throughout the book, of where we are as Christians.
What do you think about all day?
What do you desire?
What separates me from God?
What makes our lives worth living?
Jesus puts great faith in our ability to change course, to answer His call. Many of us long to change, but we’re unsure on how we are to actually change. Seek the guidance of Jesus. He’ll make your paths straight.
“Part of waiting in Communion is examining what we did last week to find the kingdom of heaven in our midst, and to help others find it”
We are called to share the Good News. “Communion is practice, which forces us to become more and more the makers of the kingdom that is both under our feet and right around the corner”
Throughout the book, Gallagher interjects comments about self examination. “By making our greatest and most important goal the one of productivity, we miss out on the ways that God’s gifts of grace come to us by doing nothing.”
Sometimes in our walk, we get too busy. We must observe the Sabbath!
Back to Communion, we are to remember that we are God’s guests at His feast. Jesus is the person who knew how to bring us back to our senses.
We need to return to the 1st and 2nd centuries way of being Christians.
Nora closes with this quote: The life of Jesus, if it is meaningful to us, is meant to reveal the nature of God.
I expected this book to teach me about the Lord’s supper. It taught so much more.
